Come to our RESPIRATORY Clinical Examination Tutorial

SWIM’s Respiratory Clinical Exam Tutorial is fast approaching. Make sure you’re prepared for your summative and come practice your skills with upper years. We’ll have a short introduction by a respiratory physician before pairing you with a tutor to walk through the exam and history-taking step-by-step.

The event will be held at the UQ Health Sciences building, 4th floor on Saturday, April 13th from 11-2. Check-in begins at 10:30 am. Our CETs are free for SWIM members and we’ll have a light lunch following the tutorial. Please use the link below to sign up and spread the word!

SWIM’s Ordinary General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 20th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Hawken, Rm N201, St. Lucia campus.

If you’re interested in being an event convenor or the SWIM first year rep, you’ll need to attend the OGM.  See below for a brief description of each position.  Bring your friends along to vote for you!

First Year Representative

First Year Representative assists executive members in running academic, social and community events, helps promote SWIM to the first years and also has an advocacy role as they represent their cohort on the UQMS First Year Focus Group.

Convenor Positions

 CET Convenor [for upper years only]

This convenor will help with organization of 4 Clinical Exam Tutorials.  This includes working with the Academic VP to book a speaker, organize attendees into tutorial groups, help with set-up, check in and food preparation on the day.  The convenor will be expected to be present at all CET dates (February 24, April 14, May 12 in first semester. Second semester dates tbd).

Guest Speaker Convenor

This convenor will assist the Academic VP in organization of Q&A Night as well as Women in Surgery Evening. His/her main role before the events will be to help secure guest speakers.  On the night he/she will help with set-up, food & drink preparation, guest registration and greeting the guest speakers.

Community Outreach and Schools Program

If you are a medical student who is interested in making a difference in your community then this position is for you!  SWIM is looking for someone to work with our Community Initiatives Officer to get medical students out in the community to help those in need.  In 2013, SWIM is aiming to become more involved in the community by going into schools to teach young girls about general health and wellness.

Fitness Program

We all know that medicine is tough, which means that it is really important to create a work-life balance.  As SWIM’s fitness convenor, you will be working with the Community Initiatives Officer to help develop and implement SWIM’s awesome athletic program and provide some fun and healthy ways for our members to unwind!

Ipswich Representative

Similar to the First Year Rep, the Ipswich rep is responsible for keeping our Ipswich cohort in the loop regarding our events.  If you’re a confident lecture basher and you want to see a bigger SWIM presence on the Ipswich campus, this is a great way to be involved.

Healthy Living Blog

Maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle is one of the aims of SWIM.  As SWIM’s Healthy Living Blogger, you will be working with the Marketing Officer to help develop a blog dedicated to upholding a healthy body and a healthy life during med school.  Subject matter of posts is pretty open-ended and could delve into a range of topics from sharing healthy recipes and meal ideas suited to the on-the-go lifestyle of a med student to inspirational tips and ideas for how to make time for fitness in the busy world of medicine, or even advice on how to approach the unique relationship challenges commonly faced by med students and doctors.  This blog should be positive and informative – but most importantly, feel free to have fun with it!

SWIM Newsletter

Our newsletter is a way to get SWIM’s name out there while promoting healthy living during med school and for life!  As editor, you will be working with the Marketing Officer in the production and distribution of this newsletter, which we aim to generate quarterly. Content can include write-ups about our events, recipes, comics, anything related to exercise, diet and work-life balance – your creativity and imagination are encouraged!

Does your heart race when you think about taking blood pressure? Do you get palpitations when you’re trying to palpate an apex beat? Never fear, SWIM’s Clinical Examination Tutorial is back and ready to show you the moves! The Clinical Exam Tutorial will take place at the Health Sciences Bldg (4th floor) on Sunday, February 24th, 2013 at 11am.

Spots are limited (and are assigned first come, first serve), so please follow the link asap to make sure you get in! The list will close on Wednesday, February 20th.

We are looking for volunteers to sign up to be Clinical Exam Tutors for one, multiple, or all of the CET’s being held throughout the year. This is a great way to brush up on clinical exam skills, prepare for OSCE’s and help out first years!
